Every student has a story.
College admission is not just about grades and scores. It's about "fit."
Most colleges do a "wholistic" review. They ask: What has this student done in high school? What can he bring to our campus? What are her passions? Will he graduate?
A good college application needs to answer these questions. Students who succeed at the college admissions game identify who they are, why they fit and why they should be admitted. They find their voice.
Not easy for most 17-year-olds, you say? You bet it isn't. That's where I come in.
High school course selection, extra curricular activities (including summer opportunities), social media posts and the all-important college essays add up the sum of your student, in addition to grades and scores.
These elements write their story.
I help students craft this narrative — the authentic, deeply personal and transformative story that colleges want to hear. I help students choose the schools where they can confidently knock on the admissions door. And I help them put together winning application packages.
With expertise in everything from student assessment to school selection, essay strategy to extra curricular fine-tuning, video documentation to website production, I help students find the words and pictures to tell their story — and to identify the colleges where they should tell it.
In the process students learn a lot about themselves... maybe the best part of it all.
Finding Fit.
When it comes to college advising, one size definitely does not fit all.
Every student is different, so every program I offer is individually tailored to save you time, money and unnecessary stress.
I take an overwhelming process and we make it fun!
I've had great success helping kids find their ideal college.
I promise to advise your student like a member of my own family.
Tuition counseling, from navigating the net-price calculator to obtaining need-based and merit awards, is also available.
About us.
After a jet-set career writing, editing and traveling for Travel & Leisure, Town & Country and Bon Appétit magazines, I founded The Write Way College Consulting because there is nothing more exciting than helping high school students take that giant leap towards college. I divide my time between Diablo, the magazine of the San Francisco East Bay where I'm a contributing writer and editor, and my role as a college advisor and essay tutor.

Every student has different needs and goals. Instead of standard packages, I tailor an individual program for each family.
One part college advisor, one part writing tutor and one part life coach, I help students compile applications that showcase them in the very best light.
We examine all the tools in a student's toolbox and sculpt something really beautiful and unique out of the available raw materials.
As a professional writer and editor, I bring real experience to the application process, crafting winning essays and documenting activities as I would illustrate an article in a magazine. I take college advising to a new level as students learn how to show "demonstrated interest" using my side-door strategy of college admissions.
With knowledge of both East and West Coast colleges and European universities (from my German husband!), I have personally toured dozens of institutions. I maintain relationships with application "readers" and admissions reps I've known since I was slogging through New England snow banks at the elite boarding schools I attended on the East Coast. I understand the collegiate world because I come from it.
Raised in the Yale community where my father was on the medical faculty,
I left the East Coast to attend college in California doing undergraduate work at the University of California, Santa Cruz and graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley.

I worked with Sara during the entire college process. I couldn't imagine doing it without her. She helped me with everything from writing to organizing where I wanted to go to college to emailing professors. It's super complicated... so it was so awesome to have Sara there to help you every step of the way.

In Their Words.
I was so stuck before I came to see Sara. I wasn't making any headway on my college essays and I was desperate. Sara immediately made me feel at ease. After an hour with her I felt like she had my back. She took all the stress out of the process. She even made me feel excited about it all! With all her professional experience she helped me find my voice as a writer. She showed me how to frame my writing to make it personal and compelling. She got me to delete my "purple prose" and clichés. Her expert help made all the difference in writing my essays. I guess it worked. I got into Stanford!

I didn't have any idea where I wanted to go to college. I didn't even know what schools I would have a chance of attending. Sara asked me questions about myself in a way another college counselor I saw never did. She really seemed to care about me. We did the "college quiz." She asked me about different types of schools to help me figure it all out. Sara made it fun and kept me organized during the whole crazy process. I was accepted at so many great schools. I really believe I never would have been able to do that without Sara's help.
Lydia M., Admitted to USC
My son didn't want me in involved in his college application process. When we found Sara I felt so relieved that someone was working with him. Sara made a stressful and contentious college application process bearable! She's a great resource! He got in almost everywhere he applied! What an advantage it is to have a professional working with your student.

Without Sara Hare's help I don't know how I would have gotten into any colleges. At first I was working with another college advisor, but I didn't get the personal approach that I had with Sara. She helped me so much!

My high school guidance counselor
said I'd never get into Northeastern. But Sara believed in me. She didn't give up even when I almost did. She explained the importance of "demonstrated interest." I sent emails to professors and we even arranged a phone call with a teacher from my major. Sara also helped me create a website that showed off all the cool projects I was working on. She really helped me with my essays, too. Sara and I selected which schools were a good fit, picking some safeties in case Northeastern didn't come through. I was crying when I called her to tell her I was accepted early decision at Northeastern, my first choice school. My college dream has come true!
Laina H., Admitted to Northeastern University.
I was so impressed by how well Sara worked with with my son. After their sessions he was always in such a good mood. The stress of applying to colleges seemed to just fall off him. She made an overwhelming process much more manageable. They did really good work together and my son got into his top choice school.
